St. Ignatius recognized that while many people could benefit from the Spiritual Exercises, some might not be suitable candidates for the entire 30–day retreat. In the “Introductory Explanations” (or Annotations) to the Exercises, Ignatius acknowledges directors who lead those candidates through a “retreat in daily life.” Fr. Tetlow’s manual is an aid for such directors. He offers guidance on preparing for the Exercises, and for each of the retreat’s four weeks. And he provides practical advice for conducting conferences with retreatants, suggestions of scriptural passages particularly suited to prayer, and more. Choosing Christ in the World includes notes based on Fr. Tetlow’s own directorial experience. This new edition of the book also recognizes Ignatius’s observation that in cases in which the material of the Exercises themselves might be beyond the grasp of some individuals, a leader might assign “light works” for prayer and spiritual growth.

I find this to be an excellent source as a spiritual director- in- training. I especially love the director’s notes but I am using all of it to assist me in companioning directees through the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

5 A well designed guide for giving the Exercises

I began using this version of the Exercises in Daily Life in 1996. Using it, I have given the retreat in its original intent to 12 individuals since then. Additionally, I have revisited these guides for meditation personally numerous times as a personal, self directed retreat four times. Finally, I have given shorter format retreats for 22 exercitants. I keep returning to Fr. Tetlow’s version becAuse of its clarity and organized presentation. I would recommend an updating of some of the auxiliary reading pages from the Viet Nam era in order to appeal to younger retreatants who have no lived memory of the 60’s and 70’s.

Tetlows approach to directing the 19th Annotation is inspiring, stimulating and timeless. The addition of 'Lightworks' section for the 18th annotation approach is especially welcome. This is an excellent resource and I am grateful to Jesuit Sources for supplying and shipping the volume to UK at such reasonable cost.
