The highest legislative body within the Society of Jesus, a general congregation meets, as stated in the Jesuit Constitutions, “for matters of greater moment.” Before the publication of this English–language book in 1994, the decrees of the first 30 congregations existed only in Latin. For Matters of Greater Moment includes a history of the congregations, giving the reader a glimpse into the circumstances surrounding each gathering and a summary of the actions it took. This volume also includes decrees, briefly explained.
