This volume addresses the interior religious life of Jesuits, centering on the vows of obedience and poverty. “What Pertains to Obedience” concerns the duty of Society members to follow not only explicit but also implied commands from superiors. “What Pertains to Poverty and Its Consequences,” the longest section of the book, deals with the historical precedents for a vow of poverty and the practical matters of how to clothe Society members and how to maintain churches and schools.
