A Purposeful Path: How Far Can You Go with $30, a Bus Ticket, and a Dream? by Casey Beaumier, S.J. (Loyola Press, 2015). Companion reading guide by Kevin Spinale, S.J.
The Summer List is a guided program of the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies at Boston College. It explores the Jesuit mission through selected readings and supplementary materials chosen to appeal to high school and first-year college students. In A Purposeful Path, Beaumier, director of the Institute for Advanced Jesuit Studies at Boston College, explores the Jesuit tradition of the pilgrimage experiment, recounting his own month-long journey as a Jesuit novice from the time he left his novitiate with $30 in his pocket. Spinale, a Jesuit scholastic and moderator of America magazine's Catholic Book Club, provides a brief synopsis of the book, considers the notion of pilgrimage (both in the Christian tradition and Beaumier's experience), and offers a variety of resources and questions to prompt and complement classroom discussion.
