Product Overview

After his injury at the battle of Pamplona, St. Ignatius of Loyola experienced a profound conversion.  During his long recovery at his family home in Loyola, he was offered two books to pass the time: the life of Christ, and the lives of the saints.  He read these books with fervor and found himself inspired to change his life.  From this moment, a deep desire to imitate the saints was enkindled within him.  This desire to imitate the saints, and for each person to discover a personal calling to be a saint, contributed to the eventual founding of the Society of Jesus.  The Society would eventually establish a community of Jesuit saints and blesseds who would inspire generations of future believers to give their lives for the greater glory of God. With over 70 biographies, both devotional and informational, compiled by Jesuits from around the world, this book aims to introduce this community of holy men and to contemporary readers and to inspire them to be selfless in their own pursuit of a greater good.

Excerpt from the preface by Arturo Sosa, SJ:

“Our saints and blesseds have been recognized as models of union with Christ and as ‘men for others.’ … all of them show well ‘the most beautiful face of the Church,’ as Pope Francis said (Gaudete et Exsultate, 9). That face is shaped by the examples of people who abandoned themselves to God and followed more closely and intensely the way of Jesus Christ. They are the beacon that illuminates and guides us in our mission.”

This book is a meaningful compendium of stories about notable Jesuits. It is of particular interest to me because my career is in Jesuit higher education. Kudos to Father General Sosa, S.J., and Father O'Malley, S.J.

    Jesuits Saints and Blesseds

This is a well-researched, thoughtful and objective account of the spiritual life and the effective practices of a large number of past members of the Society of Jesus, from early times to modern. The historical introductions were written by the late Fr. John O'Malley, S.J., one of the most accomplished Jesuit scholars of recent memory, and movingly render the subjects as both admirable and human. There are few books as engaging or as perceptive as JESUIT SAINTS AND BLESSEDS, and very few as good.

Having spent time in formation in the Society in my youth, I have come to imbibe St Ignatius’ spirit . Up until the present I continue to see myself as a son of his. The lives of the Saints have always been the substance of my spiritual reading, my staple food. Over 15 years back, Fr Joseph Tetlowe gave me copy of ‘Profile of Jesuit Saints and Beati’. I constantly go back to this slim volume on the eve of the Society’s feasts. I look forward to reading this new book to help me find nourishment for the beginning of my 7th decade of life, it will prepare me for the time I will finally meet these holy brothers when I reach the destination of my life’s pilgrimage
